On Sept. 17, Science National Honors Society (SNHS) partnered with Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful to dispose of litter surrounding the waterway at the Courtney Campbell Causeway Boatramp. Volunteers received neon vests, gloves, and trash pickers to protect themselves when disposing of cans, plastic bags, fishing wire, among other materials. In an interview with volunteers, many were surprised by the tremendous amount of fishing line, which was ubiquitous and largely intertwined with branches.
In this eco-friendly team building activity, students were brought face-to-face with the reality of plastic pollutants in their local waterways. Volunteers were also eligible for Bright Futures hours and SNHS points.
The National Science Honor Society plans to attend more waterway cleanups in the future, and do their part to keep Tampa Bay beautiful.
