2/9/12
Hello Parents and Students,
There will be a special meeting to discuss Dual enrollment on Saturday, February 18, at 3:30 pm at BDCHS. This meeting will be immediately following the prospective student open house. The purpose of this meeting is to explain requirements, procedures, and policies of dual enrollment for BDCHS students.
In order to participate in Dual Enrollment, a student must have an Unweighted (State) GPA of at least a 3.0 and be 15 years of age. A continuing dual enrollment student must also maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA at HCC. For most classes, certain test scores are required on the PERT exam, or the CPT, ACT or SAT. In order to participate in dual enrollment for this summer, all paperwork is due to HCC by March 30th. This includes test scores. With the summer deadline approaching fast, this is the time to go take the PERT and complete your application. If you are eligible and interested in beginning dual enrollment, please plan to attend this very informative and important meeting on February 18, 2012 at 3:30.

Dear Parents and Students,
From the Guidance Department, we wish you a happy healthy New Year with many positive educational opportunities ahead! This a very important time for educational planning for the next school year. Here is some important information by grade level for your student’s educational planning:
Seniors – Your college acceptances should be rolling in around this time. Please be sure to monitor acceptance deadlines and housing application information to be sure to respond on time. This is also the time to fill out your financial aid applications. Please visit www.facts.org college financial planning for helpful links to applications for the FAFSA, Bright Futures, Florida Financial Aid, and other scholarship opportunities. Please have your student come look in the scholarship binder available in the Guidance office to search for independent scholarship opportunities. We will be hosting a college financial planning information night for senior parents on January 25, 2012 at 6 pm. Hope to see everyone there!
Juniors – 11th grade is the perfect time to take college admission exams. Please sign up to take the ACT (www.actstudent.org)and the SAT (sat.collegeboard.org) exams. We have study guides for both exams available in the guidance office. Taking both exams is a great way to determine which one your student may be stronger at. These tests may be retaken multiple times with the highest scores reported.
Sophomores – If your student has a GPA of a 3.0 or higher, they may be eligible for dual enrollment. If your student is eligible and you would like them to start taking classes over the summer, now is the time to visit HCC and have them meet with an academic advisor and sign up to take the PERT exam. Paperwork will be due in March, so plan to have this done in February.
Freshman – Work hard and be sure to have your grades high to participate in dual enrollment soon! Everything you do now will impact your future. Your college applications will see your grades and activities from freshman year and beyond.
We will be hosting an HCC dual enrollment class here this spring after school at Brooks DeBartolo on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45-4:00 pm. This class is College Success Skills SLS 1501 and will begin on January 18, 2012. Students must have an unweighted high school GPA of at least a 3.0 to enroll in this class and demonstrate the ability to complete college level – work. This class does not require completion of the PERT examination. It is an excellent class for students planning to take a college class this summer or in the fall. Please contact Mrs. Hart if you meet the GPA requirements and are interested in signing up for this college class.
